What is Occupational Therapy?

All of the important activities that you need and want to do in your day, such as hiking, gardening, or even cooking, are what we call “occupations.” Sometimes life events, such as an accident or illness, can get in the way.

Occupational therapy is about helping people overcome those barriers that get in the way and helping them live a full, satisfying, and productive life.

What is an Occupational Therapist?

People who have trouble participating in day-to-day activities often benefit from occupational therapy.

These activities include what we do every day, i.e., self-care, leisure, education, home management, volunteering, and work. You may have difficulty participating in activities due to an illness or disability, or due to the social, institutional, or physical environment.

When you see an occupational therapist, he or she will assess and evaluate your “occupational performance”. This means your ability to choose, organize, and effectively and safely perform everyday activities.

Following this, together you and your OT develop a plan to improve, maintain, or restore your occupational performance and your health.

The treatment/intervention plan may include:

  • training, education, and counselling;

  • obtaining aids and specialized equipment (e.g. wheelchair); and/or

  • evaluating and modifying the home, school, or work environments.

In addition to direct care to individuals of all ages, occupational therapists may also work with groups and communities assuming the role of researcher, educator, manager, consultant, advocate, and/or program planner.

What is a Kinesiologist?

Kinesiologists are specialists in human movement. They provide assessment and treatment services for the rehabilitation of people suffering from physical injuries sustained at work, automobile collisions, sports, and other life activities. One of their primary services is active rehabilitation, which consists of the assessment of physical function followed by the implementation and progression of an individually structured and tailored exercise program to enhance and promote the safe and dependable return to an individual’s regular life activities.

Kinesiologists design and conduct health and wellness programs for all age groups, teach and organize courses and workshops in health promotion, including general fitness, sports performance, athletic training, human nutrition, and general issues related to a person’s physical well-being.

Kinesiologists provide exercise and lifestyle-based services to enhance the lives of those suffering from chronic diseases or physical and neurological injuries, such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, autism spectrum disorder, osteoporosis, arthritis, and traumatic brain injury.

What is Active Rehab?

Active rehabilitation is the utilization of precise exercises to correct an injury or loss of function. An active rehab program would be designed for you by a certified Kinesiologist to address your specific recovery needs Active rehab can take place at your home, the gym, or a pool, depending on your rehabilitation needs.

It is the final chapter in your recovery and provides you the stepping-stone from managing your injury symptoms, to being conditioned to return to your pre-injury lifestyle.

Physiotherapists (PT) assist people getting back onto their feet and moving so that they can return to normal daily activities.

What is a Physical Therapist?

Physical therapists are registered healthcare professionals who specialize in how the human body moves. Physical therapists treat people who have a loss of function from health conditions, injuries, or disabilities.

The first step is assessment. When you first visit a physical therapist, they will:

  • talk to you about the history of the problem you’re experiencing

  • examine your muscles and joints to assess your movement and strength

  • they may also do some on-the-spot tests and take some measurements

Once the assessment is complete, your physical therapist will:

  • explain their initial thoughts and findings to you

  • discuss possible goals and treatment options available

  • work with you to make a plan based on your goals

  • monitor your progress and modify treatment as needed

One key aspect of all physical therapy is education. Throughout your treatment, your physical therapist will teach you:

  • about your body and how it moves

  • how to do exercises safely and effectively

  • how to manage your condition and prevent future problems

Throughout your care, your physical therapist keeps a written record of your treatment. If needed and you agree, the physical therapist communicates with others involved in your care.

What is Clinical Counselling?

Registered clinical counsellors are healthcare professionals who specialize in mental health. Clinical counsellors work with children, youth, and adults who feel that their mental distress and/or illness is impairing their ability to function in school, work, or at home.

When you visit a clinical counsellor, they will:

  • Explain the importance of confidentiality

  • Talk to you about the history of the problem you’re experiencing

  • Ask you what strategies, if any, you have been using to cope with the problem(s)

  • Collaboratively discuss the possible goals of counselling

  • Work with you in the sessions, at your pace, to come up with treatment strategies

One key aspect of counselling is education. The counsellor may explain to you

  • How your thoughts and feeling affect your behaviour.

  • How negative thinking patterns are detrimental to your physical health

  • How mental health is intricately connected to your physical well being

Everybody experiences problems at some point in their life. Everyone experiences stress at home, work, and/or school. It is important that you have the right tools to deal with adverse situations. Asking for help is not a weakness, it is a sign that you want to do better. When you know better, you do better. Counsellors are here to support YOU and meet YOUR needs by providing a safe, non-judgmental space.
